At first I was excited to see what newly named editor-in-chief Stefano Tonchi would bring to W Magazine. But, now that his plans are to change it from being “fashion obsessed” to “general style” I’m really worried and disappointed.
The main reason I love and am dedicated to W is because of its fashion-obsessed artistically created editorial spreads and articulate writing. There is no other magazine like it. V Magazine is my next favorite, but nothing compares to W and the awesome celebrities, models, and art stories it highlights each issue.
I understand that from a business perspective if you want to keep
growing your business and making a profit you need to change. But changing W’s content and essentially its brand image may not be the way to do it. There are a dozen different ways to gain more advertiser placement in the mag, I think W just needs to think outside the box and not just “go with the crowd” and tailor to “general-interest style”. Hey W, did you think about expanding your online monthly unique visits to increase ad dollars there? The digital marketing world changes just as much as fashion does, why cant you explore there instead of changing what W Mag stands for?
Oh well. I will definitely be intrigued to see how W changes in the next few months. I guess all I can do is welcome it!
